Extending roof rafters.
A rafter is one of a series of sloped structural members such as wooden beams that extend from the ridge or hip to the wall plate downslope perimeter or eave and that are designed to support the roof deck and its associated loads.
They are called common rafters because they are common to all types of roofs and are used as the basis for laying out other types of rafters.
These are framing members that extend at right angles from the plate line to the roof ridge.
A pair of rafters is called a couple in home construction rafters are normally made of wood exposed rafters are a feature of some traditional roof styles.

Local building codes regulate the minimum amount of insulation contractors must install in new homes but existing homes can benefit from roof insulation as well.
The cost of extending my 30 foot long roof overhang 14 inches was 340 or 11 50 per running foot for materials.
Remove them and you may need to consider alternative support and bracing to the existing roof or hips.
The rafters are integral to the roof s strength.
The blocking is held low to hide the roof wall intersection and to provide a 1 inch air space at the top for a ventilation channel.
The four types are common rafters.
Types of rafters examples of most types of rafters are shown in figure 7 3.
Extending the rafters with the existing roof sheathing in place is doable but you will get better results if you add extensions during a complete reroofing project.
I have pics that i would like some one to review the rafters were 4 ft and know i exteneded them another 7 ft thanks.
Was this not detailed in the plans.
At the beam end the rafters are fastened with a 10 inch structural screw through the top of the rafter into the beam.
The standard residential roof framed with 2 by 6 rafters is an optimal spot for adding insulation because heat escapes through the roof resulting in higher energy costs.
A good estimate for a contractor to do this same roof overhang extension would range from 50 to 85 per running foot.
